The NFO's Annual Conference

THE NFO'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE will be Thursday, February 28 through Sunday, March 2, 2008 in Orlando Florida at the Holiday Inn Select

Florida in February - what a concept! We can leave our frozen homes (okay, maybe not those members living in Arizona) and head down to Orlando for the annual NFO Conference this year! Our fabulous on-site coordinator, Patricia Henderson of Orlando, has helped us plan a really wonderful, not-to-miss, conference.

The conference hotel is:
Holiday Inn Select Orlando East/UCF Area
12125 High Tech Avenue
Orlando, Fl  32817
407-275-9000
http://events.ichotelsgroup.com

Environment. This is a lovely hotel nestled in a grove of trees (complete with Spanish moss) and sitting on a lovely lake. The hotel has a complete restaurant with buffet or menu items available. The meeting space will include a dance floor for Friday night plus some small meeting areas for “break-out” or small sessions.

Meals. Breakfast is not provided. Each room has coffee makers and the hotel has a full breakfast menu and a buffet. Nearby you can find a wide variety of fast and specialty foods as well, just a couple of blocks walk or easy driving access.

Transportation. The hotel does not provide shuttle service from the airport.  We are organizing a "ground transportation committee" to help get folks from and returned to the airport, to the Whirl and Twirl from the hotel and back Saturday night.  We recommend renting a car, sharing with a friend or roomate.

Rates. Room rates for this event are $95 for either a King (up to 2 people) or a double (two Queens, up to 4 people). Tax is 12.5%. For your convenience, you can book your hotel by clicking on the link (Holiday Inn Link) and you will be taken directly to the NFO room registration.

The Conference. The conference will offer the regular business meetings but much, much more. We will have visitors from the IOV (International Organization of Folk Arts) from Austria, the Philippines and more to reunite with the NFO and establish stronger festival activity. We are also working on other aspects of the conference agenda, so if you have some special item please contact Bruce Mitchell at dancebruce@aol.com

What's included: The following are included in the $100 NFO Conference registration fee.

Thursday President's Reception. [There will be meetings planned prior to the reception.]
Friday Meetings, buffet luncheon, evening dance party. Dinner on your own.
[Friday Night dance Party ONLY - $10 at the door]
Saturday Meetings, dance classes, evening dinner banquet, dance party. Lunch on your own.
[Saturday Dance Workshop with Lee Otterholt, Dance party and Banquet - $40 in advance; $50 at the door ]
[Saturday Night Dance Party ONLY - $25 in advance; $35 at the door]

Saturday’s events and the evening banquet will be held at the Whirl and Twirl Square Dance Club http://floridasquaredance.com/whirlandtwirl/ with Lee Otterholt teaching from 10:00-12:30 and from 2:00-4:30. We will still have space available at the hotel for necessary smaller meetings. Whirl and Twirl is a unique facility since it is owned and operated solely by the Square Dance Club. To see photos of the facility just check the website, scroll down a bit and click on the “pictures” link. The building looks “industrial” on the outside, but is warm and friendly inside. With a lovely wood floor, a sound system and a stage, plus a kitchen and lots of banquet tables and chairs, this is going to be a fun place for our Saturday events. We will be treated to a catered Southern style barbeque (but we’ll have plenty of foods for the non-meat eaters too!).

Honorees -- Each year at its annual Conference, the NFO honors those who have made significant and lasting contributions to the field. List of those honored at past conferences.

Cost: Conference registration $100 for NFO members; $120 for non-members.

Registration. Please click here for a registration form.

Note: NFO Members may also pay using a credit card or PayPal. Funds will be directed to NFO VP Katherine St. John.

EPCOT. We were unable to secure a group rate (needed 31 people or more) so we are suggesting if you’d like to visit EPCOT to arrange a time/day that fits your schedule, such as a Wed. Feb. 27, Thurs. Feb. 28 or even Sunday March 2. If this is your first visit to Orlando you may want to take in this unique sight. The EPCOT direct website is quite long, so I recommend you Google EPCOT and go to the first site offered. EPCOT tickets run about $71 pp for the day.  It is open from 9am-9pm.

[For those of you wondering why we didn’t book the entire conference at a hotel near EPCOT or the DISNEY parks, the answer is cost. The hotels and meeting spaces are very expensive in that area.]

The NFO is growing and offers priceless contacts with people involved in teaching, performing and administrating all sorts of folk dance and music events and facilities worldwide. We encourage your attendance and your input at our annual meeting and look forward to seeing you again.

See you in Orlando!
